Frank Jülicher, director of the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems (MPI-PKS) and the CSBD, is one of 62 outstanding life scientists, that have been elected to the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). With his election, the biophysicist is joining a group of over 1800 of the best researchers in Europe and around the world.

EMBO members are leading scientists working in all fields of life sciences. Through their international collaborations and connections they serve and support the research community in Europe and beyond. The selected researchers are actively involved in the execution of the organization’s initiatives, such as evaluating applications for EMBO funding, mentoring young scientists or providing suggestions and feedback on activities.

The main focus of Jülicher’s research is to develop theoretical approaches to understand dynamic processes in cells and tissues, such as the dynamics of the cell cytoskeleton, or the shaping of tissues during development. Bridging between theoretical physics and experimental biology he closely collaborates with experimental groups, particularly at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics Dresden (MPI-CBG). Consequently, Frank acts as one of the three directors of our joint, interdisciplinary center representing physics next to computer science and biology.

EMBO is a European research organization founded in 1964, that promotes excellence in the life sciences. Applicants for membership are proposed and elected by other members on the basis of outstanding scientific achievements. The new EMBO Members will be formally welcomed at the Members’ Meeting in Heidelberg between 24 and 26 October 2018.
